Graduate Art Education
The MA in Art Education is designed to address the needs of teachers who are interested in extending their professional practice as artists, teachers and researchers by offering them the opportunity to acquire a master?s degree that concentrates on both studio and art education practice. Students will have the opportunity to critically explore the cultural, aesthetic, technical, and social aspects in art and art education within a liberal arts context.
Participants will be admitted annually into a cohort-based program of 6-10 students during the summer session, and will move through the program of study with the cohort group with which they are admitted. The cohort model is well suited for those who desire to work within a community of creative educators and artists who support and promote the greatest possible development of its members. The program, which will be custom-designed to meet individual needs, can be completed in two or two and a half years and totals 33 semester hours. Student will be encouraged to declare their studio area of concentration early, which will help assist with adequate scheduling of courses. In addition, careful advising will be critical to managing course scheduling.
Students must complete a minimum of 33 semester credit hours at the graduate level: 12 hours of studio coursework, 3 hours of graduate studio critique, 9 hours of art education coursework, 3 hours of art history, 3 hours of academic elective, and 3 hours of thesis research or exhibition research. To fulfill the thesis requirement, students may choose one of two options: a written thesis or classroom-based curriculum project OR a MA studio project (develop and present a body of work).
