Master of Art (MA) in Art Education
Students must complete a minimum of 33 semester credit hours at the graduate level (only grades of "C" or better will count as hours toward graduation).
- 12 hours of studio coursework
- 3 hours in graduate studio critique
- 9 hours of art education coursework
- 3 hours of art history
- 3 hours of acedemic elective
- 3 hours of thesis research or exhibition research
To fulfill the thesis requirement, students may choose one of two options:
- a written thesis or a classroom-based curriculum project
- a MA studio project (develop and present a body of work)
Master of Art (MA) in Art History
Candidates must complete a minimum of 30 semester credit hours at the graduate level (only grades of "C" or better will count as hours toward graduation).
- 21 hours of coursework in Art History, of which 6 hours must be seminars in two different areas or periods, and at least 12 hours of which must be in regular lecture courses
- 3 hours in studio art or related courses inside or outside the School of Art.
- 3 hours of Contemporary Art Theory and Criticism.
- 3 hours of written thesis credit
In addition, as a prerequisite to admission to MA degree candidacy and thesis work, students must satisfactorily complete a comprehensive examination in art history after successful completion of 18 semester hours of art history courses.
Candidates in art history are also required to demonstrate a reading proficiency in one of the approved languages of scholarship other than English. The appropriate language will be determined in consultation with the student's advisor (who will be one of the full-time faculty in art history). Proficiency is usually certified by a B-level examination or equivalent. For specific information on the administration of the "B" level examination, (i.e., specific dates, times and places) students should contact the appropriate language department.
