ARTalks: Kevin Tavin

September 11, 2006

Where: Bowen Thompson Student Union - Room 206 (Theater)

Dr. Tavin teaches at Ohio State and specializes in the topic of violence and terrorism in and through contemporary visual culture. He is widely published and is considered one of the foremost authorities in the area. His talk is entitled, now get this, "The Terr(or)utorialization of Art Education" and asks the question, how are art educators "knowingly and unknowingly, actively and passively contributing to antidemocratic social relationships." In a larger sense, how can we, as art educators, college instructors in the visual arts, and even our students resist the "War of Terror" through visual culture?

Clarissa Sligh: Jake in Transition from Female to Male

August 22 through September 17, 2006

Where: Fine Arts Center - Willard Wankelman Gallery

...a traveling exhibition courtesy of Visual Studies Workshop

I interrogate my location as a photographer while making pictures of Jake as he transitioned from female to male. How did life experiences, the perspective from which I see and understand, influence the framing of the image? At the time Jake asked me to photograph his sex change from female to male, in 1996, her name was Deb. Although the act had its own value and meaning, it was not my issue and I was wary of the ethical and political violence inherent in "speaking for others.

...Working with and supporting someone whose values and beliefs differ radically from my own is forcing me to face some things about myself that I never wanted to look at. It is the experience that is grounded in my body, the Self-Other conflict that reverberates with the history of the Master-Slave relationship, and its strong resonance within our culture that I continue to explore.

- Clarissa Sligh, from the catalog

Clarissa Sligh is a widely exhibited independent artist who has received many awards, including an NEA Fellowship, and teaches in the graduate photography department at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her photographs lay the ground for investigations in diverse media of issues of gender, race and the diverse nature of American society.

New Talent 2006: Incoming Freshman Art Scholarship Recipients

June 15, 2006

Where: Bowen-Thompson Student Union Gallery

This exhibition is comprised of artwork created by incoming freshman BFA degree candidates who have received scholarships from BGSU's School of Art. Three out of eleven scholarship recipients have submitted artwork from their portfolios for display. They are:

Eric Kubli from Canfield High School
Jillian Patton from Olentangy Liberty High School
Gregory Pugh from East Kentwood High School

The Incoming Freshman Talent Award Scholarship is based on talent exhibited in the artwork each of these artists included in the portfolios they submitted as part of their application to the School of Art.

They have each participated in a Portfolio Review by the January 21, 2006 scholarship eligibility deadline. During their initial Portfolio Reviews these students were nominated by their faculty reviewer to submit a slide portfolio for a second Scholarship Portfolio Review. 11 students out of 25 nominees were selected to receive this special scholarship award.

These artists all have held an active roll in their high schools in art among other pursuits. We look forward to welcoming them as part of the BGSU School of Art community this coming fall and to witnessing their artistic growth in the years ahead.

This exhibit is free and open to the public.

BTSU Galleries hours are 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Saturday and 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on Sundays when the building is open, except University holidays. Call the BTSU Information Center at 419-372-2741 to confirm hours of operation.
