Ceramics Workshop with Luo Xiaoping and Shao Junya

Where: FAC Ceramics Studio

The Student Ceramics Organization is sponsoring Luo Xiaoping and Shao Junya, ceramic artists from Yixing, China. Xiaoping is a ceramic sculptor working with both figurative and vessel content; Junya makes functional teapots. They will demonstrate traditional handbuilding techniques in the ceramics studio Wednesday, March 26th from 9am to 5pm. Free and open to the public.

Visiting Artist's Lecture: Chido Johnson

Visiting Glass Sculptor: Herb Babcock

Where: FAC Glass studio and room 1101

Demonstration: 11:30am FAC glass studio Lecure: 6:30pm, FAC room 1101 Herb Babcock has taught at the College for Creative Studies, Center for Art and Design in Detroit, Michigan since 1975. During this time he has served as both Chairman of Glass and Chairman of the Crafts Department. From 1965-74 his work was predominantly fabricated steel sculpture. From 1974-83 he worked in gals image vessel format and in 1983 he began combining glass and steel into sculptural forms. He is a strong supporter and spokesperson for glass and other craft arts. His work is shown in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally. Sponsored by: BGSU Student Art Glass Association

BERNARD WOMA , ROLAND VAZQUEZ and Friends in Concert

Monday March 24th, 8:00 pm in Kobacker Hall, College of Music Free and Open to the Public. Bernard Soglinson Woma (Oyibo) Bernard Woma is a master xylophonist and drummer from the Upper West Region of Ghana, West Africa. Woma is currently solo xylophonist (since 1989) and Master drummer (since 1993) with the National Dance Company at the National Theatre, Accra Ghana. He received the Best Drummer Award for the National Dance Company (1990) and has acted as the Companys lead drummer since 1992. Woma regularly performs on the Atumpan drums for Ghanaian ceremonial events and performed for President Clinton in 1998. Woma has produced two CDs for Western distribution. Woma is also an inspiring teacher. He is currently in residence at Williams College and has taught at SUNY-Fredonia (1998). Woma has led workshops and performances at Indiana University, Clark University, University of New Jersey, Governors School at Pennsylvania, BGSU and other institutions. Woma established a music, art, and culture center in Medie, Ghana in 2000. BGSU students were in residence at the center in both June of 2000 and May of 2002. Womas visit will be a welcome addition to the multicultural initiative on campus and will clearly benefit both BGSU students and members of the community at large. He is scheduled to speak at a variety of classes in the School of Art and College of Musical Arts, give a percussion master class, coach the CMAs Afro-Caribbean Ensemble, speak at Chapman Learning Center and to Honors classes, and perform with Roland Vazquez and his Latin jazz ensemble. Woma is also tentatively slated to perform at the African Students Association dinner, Sunday March 30. Roland Vazquez Drummer/producer Roland Vazquez serves on the University of Michigan faculty as a member of the Jazz and Improvisation Department. After working as a drummer with R&B and rock bands in and around Los Angeles, he began composing for his first jazz-fusion band in 1974, eventually forming the Urban Ensemble. He was also a member of Clare Fischer's Grammy award winning band Salsa Picante from 1978-81. Vazquez's first CD release, Urban Ensemble: The Music of Roland Vazquez (1979, GRP) was called "a decade ahead of its time" (Billboard). He continued to expand his "funky-salsa-bebop" styledeveloping unique compositions for various instrumentations (tentet, octet, quintet, solo piano, and big band) on the albums which followed: Feel Your Dream ('82); The Tides of Time ('88); and No Separate Love ('91). His most recent CD, Further Dance ('96) features the Roland Vazquez Quintet performing nine Vazquez originals and two duo improvisations. Vazquez was commissioned by the Illinois Philharmonic for a concerto for string quartet and orchestra. The resulting work, Ghost in the Mountain, was premiered by the IPO in March, 2000. Vazquez was a member of the jazz faculty at Manhattan School of Music from 1988-2000. He earned his master's of music degree from the Manhattan School of Music, and his bachelor's of music degree from Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah. He has received numerous awards including Meet The Composer Award, ASCAP Special Awards, Arts International Award, and the National Endowment for the Arts in Jazz Performance.
