Beholding Violence: A Conference on Medieval and Early Modern Culture
February 28, 2008
Where: Bowling Green State University
Bowling Green State University will host the interdisciplinary conference, Beholding Violence: A Conference on Medieval and Early Modern Culture, between February 28- March 1, 2008. Co-organized by Dr. Allie Terry in Art History and Dr. Erin Labbie in English, both professors at BGSU, the conference takes as its point of departure the beholder of violence and the significance of the gaze in medieval and early modern culture. Nearly forty scholars from North America and Europe, as well as the prominent keynote speakers, W. J. T. Mitchell and Michael Uebel, will foreground the centrality of the play of history in our knowledge about the present and our concept of the future. Papers will consider how images, texts and performances promoted, supported or helped negotiate real or imagined violence during the era and consider how certain types of artistic or literary production may be viewed as a response to collective cultural attitudes and customs.
The conference is sponsored by the School of Art, the Institute for the Study of Culture & Society, the Graduate College, Office of Sponsored Programs and Research, Departments of English, American Culture Studies, GREAL, and Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society.
