David Hilliard - The Highway of Thought
October 3, 2011
Where: 204 Fine Arts Center
Time: 7:30 PM
For over a decade David Hilliard has made work that has been exhibited and published widely. His images, included in the Art Institute of Chicago, the George Eastman House, the Fogg Museum at Harvard University, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, among many others, have made a significant contribution to the contemporary discourse in photography.
The camera has, at its core, a descriptive purpose. In the hands of Hilliard, enduring, familiar domestic events and settings are described through the construction of large -scale panoramic photographs.
Born from an autobiographical source, Hilliard acknowledges photography''s inherent fictional capacity through the careful arrangement of his images within the larger photograph.
Hilliard concerns himself with big and important themes. Incorporating the camera''s particular and peculiar technical assets of shifts in focal plane and its ability to capture intimate moments, his lens alternately distills and reveals his thoughts on gender, relationship or religion, gently and elegantly.
