"Tea Bowls for Japan" : BGSU Ceramics Dept. Sells Handmade Bowls to Raise Funds for Earthquake Relief

BOWLING GREEN –  Bowling Green State University’s Ceramics department is holding a fundraiser “Tea Bowls for Japan” this month to raise money for the town of Mashiko, a historical ceramics center in northern Japan that was affected by the earthquake on March 11, 2011.

Mashiko is home to over 400 potters, including the workshops of Japanese National Treasures Shoji Hamada and Tatsuzo Shimaoka.  Artwork in this historical pottery center is on hold until their homes, workshops, and kilns can be repaired.

To help with repairs, BGSU’s ceramic students have decided to make and sell tea bowls for $10-15 as part of their “Tea Bowls for Japan” fundraiser.  All funds will be donated to the Mashiko Potters Fund, a non-profit institution set up to aid the potters and pottery institutions exclusively.  BGSU’s “Tea Bowls for Japan” fundraiser will be selling handmade ceramic bowls on April 21 -22 at the Clay Club’s 15th Annual Spring Ceramics Sale in the Fine Arts Building.

The fundraiser continues on April 25 at the Bowen Thompson Student Union and will conclude on April 27 at the “Hump Day Revue” event at Grumpy Dave’s Pub on Main Street.
