Revelations and Reflections of American Self-Taught Artists
November 15, 2003 through January 18, 2004
Where: Willard Wankelman Gallery
Spirituality, a major theme in art for as long as humans have made it, is given accessible and vibrant expression in this exhibition of American, self-taught artists from all walks of life and from all regions of the country. Unconstrained by formal instruction and artistic affiliation, these inspired individuals represent heaven, hell, and purgatory; earthly temptations and blessings; angels, devils, and deamons- the deamons of society and those within their own hearts. Many self-taught artists have a profound influence on family members, who also take up the making of art. Included in this exhibition are two such family groups: Michael Finster, the grandson of renowned folk artist Howard Finster, and Mose Tolliver and his daughter, Annie Tolliver. This exhibition, featuring works by a number of prominent American self-taught artists, is curated by Robert Cugno and Robert Logan, directors of Media Gallery in Garnett, Kansas, and circulated by ExhibitsUSA. December 15 - January13: Closed for Winter Recess

Radical Line: Contemporary Chinese Art
October 18 through November 9, 2003
Where: Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery
This exhibition opens as part of our 24th Annual New Music and Art Festival, an international event that each year brings a number of contemporary composers and artists to Bowling Green. Radical Line: Contemporary Chinese Art sets its sights on the influences - collision, rejection, integration - that have motivated a number of important contemporary Chinese artists to reexamine their relationship to traditional Chinese media and values as they intersect with Western culture and ideas. Radical Line refers not only to the tradition of ink drawing and calligraphy, but also to an edge or border that has been delineated, and crossed, by these artists. The invited artists, all with significant international exhibition records, include Xu Bing, Qin Feng, Wang Dong Ling, Pan Xinglei, Huang Chih-Yang, Gu Wenda, Zhou Hejun, Xing Fei, Qiu Zhijie and Wang Tiande, C.C. Wang and others. Sponsored by the Ohio Arts Council, Ethnic Cultural Arts Program, and Medici Circle. Friday, October 17, 6:30 p.m.: Opening Reception 7:00 p. m. Performance: Pan Xing Lei will create a performance piece. Pan Xing Lei is an inner city, performance and graffiti artist, and creator of the modern scroll.
