Bowling Green State University's School of Art offers an extensive range of scholarships and awards. The list below provides for each award: the award name, the eligibility and submission criteria, and anticipated monetary total for the award. Please note students who meet the minimum requirements listed are automatically considered for these awards unless otherwise noted.

Incoming Freshman Talent Award Scholarship

Number of Awards: 8 - 10
Amount of each award: Minimum $1000
Term of Award Tuition waiver for the first year of full-time study as a BFA degree candidate
Eligibility High school seniors accepted into BGSU School of Art BFA program Nomination by faculty reviewer as a result of a BFA Portfolio Review.

Scholarship consideration for the upcoming academic year is given to those applicants whose portfolio is approved by the President's Day On-Campus portfolio review in February or submitting a mail-in portfolio that is received by the School of Art Office before or by the President's Day on-campus portfolio review in February.


Incoming Freshman Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition Scholarship

Number of Awards: 1
Amount of each award: Minimum $1000
Term of Award Tuition waiver for the first year of full-time study as a BFA degree candidate
Eligibility Applicant to BGSU and is the highest ranking incoming freshman exhibiting in the Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition

The recipient of this scholarship will be determined soon after the jury process for the Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition is completed.

Current Freshman Talent Award Scholarship

Term of Award Awarded in the spring of the freshman year to be applied towards tuition for the sophomore year

Sophomore Talent Award Scholarship

Amount of each award: Minimum $1000
Term of Award Awarded in the spring of the sophomore year to be applied towards tuition for the junior year

Junior Talent Award Scholarship

Eugene Fenn Endowed Scholarship

Number of Awards: 1

Term of Award Awarded in the spring to be applied towards tuition the following academic year
Eligibility Candidates must be full-time BFA student (sophomore, junior, or rising senior) majoring in graphic design with a 3.0 minimum GPA, with consideration given to academic achievement, participation in extra-curricular activities and demonstrated financial need. Demonstration of financial need is determined through the BGSU Student Financial Aid Office. The recipient must be enrolled full-time in the following academic year



Charles & Carol Harper Book Award

Number of Awards: 2
Amount of each award: TBA
Term of Award Awarded in the spring; applied to bursar account in the following fall when enrolled for classes
Eligibility The recipients must be either a BFA Art Education or BA Art History major (sophomore, junior or rising senior) with a 3.0 minimum GPA. They must also be a contributing member to their respective division, division faculty and peers. The recipient is chosen by division faculty from a list of students meeting the criteria



Dominick and Elizabeth Labino Art and Technology Award

Number of Awards: 1
Amount of each award: $750 (average)
Term of Award Awarded in the spring and applied to bursar account
Eligibility Presented to a BFA Senior, exhibiting in the annual BFA Senior Exhibition, whose work demonstrates a strong blend of science, technology and aesthetics. A committee of the School of art faculty will select the nominees with the recipient to be determined by an external juror



Charles Lakofsky Art Award

Number of Awards: 1
Amount of each award: $300 (average)
Term of Award Awarded in the spring to be applied towards tuition the following academic year
Eligibility Recipient will be the member of the Junior BFA class and a rising senior with the highest GPA (3.5 minimum) and is to be announced in spring at the opening of the annual Undergraduate Exhibition. Automatic consideration. The award is not made available until the following Fall when the student is enrolled as a full-time BFA student and is attending classes. The recipient cannot also be the recipient of Clark, Hillard, or Leedy scholarships in the same year



Paul F. and Thelma I. Leedy Scholarship (Rotates with other areas of study on campus)

Amount of each award: Variable amount
Term of Award Awarded in the spring.
Eligibility Available to a rising BA or BFA senior with the highest GPA (3.0 minimum). Automatic consideration. The recipient cannot also be the recipient of Clark, Hillard, or Lakofsky scholarships in the same year.



Dorothy MacKenzie Annual Purchase Award

Aaron Macy Memorial Scholarship

Number of Awards: 1
Amount of each award: $1000 (minimum)
Term of Award Awarded in the spring and applied to bursar account
Eligibility For an Undergraduate BFA or MFA in ceramics. Recognizes artistic achievement in the field of ceramics, with preference given to wood-fire ceramic students. Emphasis is placed on the following attributes: strong work ethic, devotion to community, passion for learning, intellectual curiosity, and an emphasis on ceramic investigation. Graduate students must submit an application made available in the spring semester to the head of the Ceramics area. The recipient will be selected by a committee.



Medici Circle Best of Show Award

Silvia Passerini Davenport Design Award

Number of Awards: 1

Eligibility BFA in Graphic Design student (sophomore, junior, rising senior) based on exhibited talent in the undergraduate student exhibition determined by Graphic Design faculty.



John and Norma Richards Design Award

Amount of each award: $200 (average)
Term of Award Awarded in the spring and applied torwards tuition the following academic year
Eligibility BFA in Graphic Design, full time student who is a rising senior with the highest GPA (3.5 minimum). The recipient must be enrolled full time in the following academic year.



Craig A. Schnuth Art Glass Scholarship

Number of Awards: 1
Amount of each award: $250 (average)
Term of Award Awarded in the spring and applied to tuition the following academic year
Eligibility BFA Undergraduate glass student (sophomore, junior or rising senior) exhibiting in the undergraduate student exhibition, based on artistic creativeness in glass. A selection committee will determine the recipient.



Marilyn Singleton/Medici Circle Undergraduate Leadership Award

Number of Awards: 1
Amount of each award: $100 (average)
Term of Award Awarded in the spring and applied to bursar account
Eligibility Awarded to one BFA undergraduate in the School of Art that has excelled in leadership abilities. Recipient will be selected by School of Art faculty



James W. Strong 2D Studies Tuition Scholarship

Number of Awards: 1
Amount of each award: $400 (average)
Term of Award Awarded in the spring to be applied towards tuition the following academic year
Eligibility BFA 2-D Studies major (sophomore, junior, or rising senior) in the Undergraduate Student Exhibition, with commitment to the arts and GPA in good standing. Selected by 2-D faculty. The recipient must be enrolled full-time in the following academic year.



James W. Strong 3D Studies Tuition Scholarship

Amount of each award: $400 (average)
Term of Award Awarded in the spring to be applied towards tuition the following academic year
Eligibility BFA 3-D Studies major (sophomore, junior, or rising senior) in the Undergraduate Student Exhibition, with commitment to the arts and GPA in good standing. Selected by 3-D faculty. The recipient must be enrolled full-time in the following academic year.



James W. Strong Digital Arts Tuition Scholarship

Term of Award Awarded in the spring to be applied towards tuition the following academic year
Eligibility BFA Digital Arts major (sophomore, junior, or rising senior) in the Undergraduate Student Exhibition, with commitment to the arts and GPA in good standing. Selected by Digital Arts faculty. The recipient must be enrolled full-time in the following academic year.



James W. Strong Graphic Design Tuition Scholarship

James W. Strong Outstanding Undergraduate Award

Eligibility Automatic consideration for all BA and BFA undergraduates (sophomores and juniors) in the top 20% of their class, service to the School of Art will be considered. The recipient will be selected by School of Art faculty vote.



James W. Strong Outstanding Senior Award

Term of Award Awarded in the spring and applied to bursar account
Eligibility Automatic consideration to all BA and BFA seniors with a GPA in the top 20% of their class. Service to the School of Art will be considered. The recipient will be selected by School of Art faculty vote.



James W. Strong Studio Achievement Award: 2D

Number of Awards: 1
Amount of each award: $100 (average)
Term of Award Awarded in the spring and applied to bursar account
Eligibility The recipient will be selected by the 2D faculty from the 2D entries in the BFA Senior Exhibition.



James W. Strong Studio Achievement Award: 3D

Eligibility The recipient will be selected by the 3D faculty from the 3D entries in the BFA Senior Exhibition.



James W. Strong Studio Achievement Award: Digital Arts

Eligibility The recipient will be seleced by the Digital Arts faculty from the Digital Arts entries in the BFA Senior Exhibition.



James W. Strong Studio Achievement Award: Graphic Design

Agnes Sutter Young Hillard Scholarship (Rotates with other areas of study on campus)

Eligibility Available to a BA or BFA student (sophomore, junior or rising senior) with the highest GPA (3.5 minimum) and a citizen of Ohio. Automatic consideration. Cannot also be the recipient of Clark, Lakofsky or Leedy scholarships in the same year.



Marietta Kirschner Wigg Memorial Print Award

Number of Awards: 1
Amount of each award: $350 (average)
Term of Award Awarded in the spring and applied to bursar account
Eligibility The recipient of this award will be determined by the BFA Senior Exhibition jurors for the distinguished printmaking entry.



Art Glass Travel Award

Number of Awards: 1-2
Amount of each award: $500 (average)
Term of Award Awarded in the spring; reimbursement following travel
Eligibility Candidate must be a BFA 3D Studies major (junior) in the glass program, having completed or currently in their third glass class at BGSU. Must be a contributing member to the glass shop, participate in fundraising and volunteer activities, and have future plans to continue in glass study or professional work. Must submit an essay and photographs of work to the selection committee and have work exhibited in the Undergraduate Student Exhibition. Recipient will make a presentation the following fall semester to fellow glass students regarding the travel.



Clark Academic Excellence Scholarship (rotates with other areas of study on campus)

Term of Award Awarded in the spring
Eligibility Candidate must be a BA or BFA rising senior with the highest GPA (3.0 minimum), with consideration given to academic excellence or outstanding achievement, and demonstrated financial need. Demonstration of financial need is determined through the BGSU Student Financial Aid Office. Automatic consideration. The recipient must be enrolled full-time in the following academic year. Cannot also be the recipient of Hillard, Lakofsky or Leedy scholarships in the same year.



Elizabeth S. and Gary L. Cole Scholarship in Art

Amount of each award: $500-$1000 (average)
Term of Award Awarded in the spring for travel to SACI, Florence, Italy in the early summer
Eligibility Candidate must be a BFA art or BA art history major (sophomore, junior, rising senior) in good academic standing. Based on submission of a selected portfolio of 6-8 works of art for BFA art majors or two academic writing samples for BA art history majors. Recipient will be chosen by an internal selection committee.



Doris Marie Herner Award

Eligibility Candidate must be a BFA 2D Studies major (sophomore, junior or rising senior) studying drawing or painting as their emphasis and participating in the Undergraduate Student Exhibition. Recipient will be chosen by an internal selection committee.



Thomas Hilty Scholarship

Amount of each award: $500-$1000 (average)
Term of Award Awarded in the spring towards program costs to study at SACI, Florence, Italy in early summer
Eligibility Candidate must be a BFA studio arts or BA art history major (sophomore, junior, rising senior) in good academic standing (2.85 minimum GPA) and enrolled for a minimum of 6 hours. Based on submission of a selected portfolio of 6-8 works of art for BFA art majors or two academic writing samples for BA art history majors. Recipient will be chosen by an internal selection committee.



Robert W. Hurlstone Memorial Art Glass Award

Number of Awards: 1
Amount of each award: $500 (average)
Term of Award Awarded in the spring and applied to bursar account
Eligibility Candidate must be a BFA 3D Studies major (junior or senior) in the glass program with a minimum of two years of study in glass at BGSU (4 courses). Must be a contributig member to the School's glass shop, participate in fundraising and volunteer activities, and have future plans to continue in glass study or professoinal work. Must submit an essay and photographs of work to the selection committee and have work exhibited in the Undergraduate or BFA Student Exhibitions.



Medici Circle Purchase Prize Award

Eligibility Candidate will be a BFA major (senior) exhibiting in the BFA Senior Exhibition. Recipient will be chosen by a Medici Circle selection committee.
